US Pipe Chattanooga, TN Implosion PDF Print E-mail

Drivers coming into Chattanooga, TN from the west on Interstate 24 entered the city by driving past U.S. Pipe and Foundry. It had been there for a century.

On Sunday morning June 10, 2007 blaster Eric Kelly used 34 pounds of well-placed explosives and brought down two buildings at the site, splitting them in two and allowing the segments to fall away from each other.

About 50 people turned out to watch, including Mayor Ron Littlefield, who said nothing brings out the little boy in a person like blowing things up. Partners of Pipe Properties, the company that bought the land hired Advanced Explosives Demolition to implode the historic building. AED teamed with Marcor Remediation supervisor Tim Barker for the clean up.

U.S. Pipe was established in 1867. It became the largest domestic producer of iron pipes used for transmitting drinking water and employed thousands of workers.

People are still amazed...

"On behalf of St. Lucy's parishioners and in my own name, I wish to express our profound gratitude for the magnificent work you did in the demolition of Columbus Homes. It was a perfect job. We are not accustomed to such a professional conduct. People are still amazed at how smoothly everything went. So many were concerned about the safety of the Church. They were extremely happy to hear that the statues did not move and windows and walls did not crack in this 102 year old church, only 50' from the implosion."
